This is the raw interview that I got the quote in the promo from
Script:
My name is Firas Alatraqchi I've
been a journalist for 18 years, I've worked as a journalist in the Middle East
and North America, most recently I've worked at Al Jazeera English, as the
online senior editor in charge of convergence, and I'm an AUC alumnus.
I went to AUC in 1989, graduated
from physics in February 94, I was editor in chief of the caravan at that time
so I did my masters in journalism and I graduated in 1997.
Fortunately by the time that I got
into the caravan, a few years prior to that they had stopped using actual, I
don’t even know what its called, using printing press technology where they
actually get letters and line them up and you know the old way of printing
newspapers that was radically changed with computing.
The way that the layout was done was
pretty much the same as it is now although with a lot more limitations, we were
using a program at the time called ready set go 123, something like that, I think
it was a precursor to excel, not really sure, of course In Design is a lot
easier to use now.
One thing that stands out as a huge
difference is obviously the time it took
to take a picture and get it into the newspaper, right now you can take
a picture and within 5 minutes have it uploaded…sorry downloaded onto your
computer and ready to be uploaded to a website or to be used as a part of the
graphic design of your newspaper, whereas before you either sent the film off
to a photo lab off campus or if you were a good enough photographer you would
develop the film on campus, so the whole process could take *cough* two to
three hours, obviously that’s 175 minutes longer than it does take now, so
computers weren’t as advanced, weren’t as fast, of course there was word
processing and all that, some of the professors in 1992-1993 were still using
typewriters, so you know I think a few students don’t even know what a type
writer is right now.
